About the Project: Behind the Frontlines is a podcast for first responders / service members and their families. It is a guest podcast featuring individuals from the first responder and military fields. It is a space to share stories, trauma, and laughs and to build a community of likeminded individuals who can find solace in each other. I designed this podcast as a way to help combat the mental health epidemic associated with these difficult careers.
Research: The design challenge for this project was to create and brand a podcast inspired by someone in our life. I chose someone in my life who spent time as a volunteer firefighter as my inspiration for this podcast. I did research on first responder related professions as well as research on what, if any, competitors there are out there covering similar topics. I also began to brainstorm and sketch potential logo solutions.
Drafts: As I began drafting digital solutions to the brand identity for the podcast, I focused on choosing meaningful colors that represented what the podcast is about. I also brainstormed and designed many symbols relating to firefighter, police, EMT, and military careers and how to represent these careers accurately within the logo. I decided to use red and blue as my main brand colors since these colors are often associated with firefighting and police careers. After brainstorming and sketching, I put together the 3 best logos as well as a draft of the brand sheet.
Deliverables: Following feedback and deliberation on my first drafts, I decided to remove the EKG line because I felt the element wasn’t adding anything to the design and was making the logo too busy. I also adjusted the typefaces and the way they are being used within the design. I simplified the remaining design elements to create an effective brand identity. My final deliverables were 3 finished logos (main logo, secondary logo, and typographic logo), a full brand sheet, and mockups of the brand identity in use through social media, Spotify and merchandise such as stickers and water bottles.
